State Senate District 29

Meet Tina

Tina Garcia, a dedicated public servant with a rich history of judicial and community leadership, is now seeking to extend her commitment to the community by running for New Mexico Senate District 29. Tina, a proud lifelong resident of Valencia County, culminated her notable judicial career upon retiring as Magistrate Judge of Division 1 in Valencia County in January 2021. Her tenure on the bench began in 2006, marking a continuation of her dedicated service to the community, which was previously demonstrated in her role as Valencia County Clerk from 2000 to 2006.

Throughout her career, Tina has been recognized for her commitment to professional development and excellence. She was honored with a Certificate of Achievement from the Local Government Leadership Program in 2004, and furthered her judicial expertise with a Certificate in Judicial Development Special Court Trial Skills from the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada, in 2012. As the Presiding Judge of Valencia County, she also made significant strides in addressing community issues by initiating a Truancy Court aimed at assisting students and families struggling with school attendance. Her leadership extended to serving as a DWI Drug Court Judge, emphasizing her commitment to addressing substance abuse issues within the community.

Tina’s dedication to the judiciary and her community is further evidenced by her appointment to the Magistrate Advisory Committee by the Supreme Court, her current role as a mentor to newly elected judges, and her service as a Pro Tempore Judge as needed. In June 2021, Tina’s commitment to education led to her appointment as an Advisory Board Member to the Los Lunas School Board by the PED Secretary, where she subsequently served as President.

Raised in Valencia County, Tina is a product of its educational system, graduating from Los Lunas High School in 1984. The values of family and community are deeply ingrained in her, being the daughter of Frank and Geri Gonzales (deceased), and building a life with her husband, Steve Garcia. Together, they have raised three children who have also contributed to the legacy of education in their community by graduating from Los Lunas Schools. Tina and Steve enjoy spending quality time with their family, including their nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, through activities such as fishing, boating, traveling, and simply enjoying each other’s company.

Issues

Crime

Tackling the critical issues of crime, addiction, and homelessness demands focused attention and a compassionate stance. Tina Garcia is acutely aware of the challenges facing Valencia, Socorro, and counties across New Mexico, including rising rates of property and violent crimes, DWIs, domestic violence, and child abuse. She knows these challenges can't be solved quickly or single-handedly but is committed to applying her expertise and experience towards finding effective, sustainable solutions. During her tenure as a judge, Tina collaborated extensively with various law enforcement agencies and community enforcement initiatives. Tina is committed to working alongside officers, community leaders, and governmental bodies to ensure our law enforcement personnel and local employees receive the support they need.

Education

Education serves as the cornerstone for building a stronger, more equitable society. Recognizing the invaluable roles of students and teachers is crucial. As both a school board member and a product of the public school system, Tina understands the significance of education, including the critical need for supportive budgets and programs. Her experience equips her to champion initiatives that ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed.

Access to Medical and Mental Health Services:

Valencia and Socorro counties are in dire need of enhanced resources, improved transportation, and greater support for accessing medical and mental health treatment. The challenges of finding medical practitioners in rural areas, securing hospital services, or obtaining drug and alcohol treatment are significant. We must improve our efforts in reaching and assisting our most vulnerable populations. The prevalence of child welfare issues, abuse, poverty, and homelessness in our communities is alarmingly high, and it's imperative that we identify and implement effective solutions.
